Yeah, this Ministry asshole changed his mind and sent me to grab him myself. If he asks me to get him a coffee I’m breakin’ his friggin’ nose.
Born 15 March 2155, North America
Amber Wells did not grow up knowing love. Her father was detached and her mother treated her like a nuisance. Creeping around after bedtime, she overheard her father telling a friend that when her mother was pregnant, he did not want to keep the baby. Her mother, a Catholic, kept it even though she did not want the baby either. As a result, neither parent was good to her, and they were miserable with each other.
It was painful to hear, but at the same time, it all made sense. In that moment, her whole life was painted clearly before her. Unwanted, unloved, why was she alive? Suicide was not an option because God does not approve, according to Catholocism. But, that religion is also why she was being forced to live a miserable life, and her parents did not even live up to the religion’s standards. They abided its rules out of existential fear. So, she removed Catholicism from her moral rubric.
Doing that, however, left her with a lot to sort through. If there is no God then there is no Heaven and Hell. If she kills herself, what happens? Where does she go? If there is no creator, why are we here? What is the purpose of life? She fell asleep to these thoughts and when she awoke the next day, the world was full of color. Everything was new. Curiosity had taken the reins and she burst into the world reborn. Even going to school and learning was a thrill as she yearned to find meaning and purpose.
No longer caring about her parents’ love and approval, Amber became more independent, ultimately ridding herself of her family at age eleven when Brands became law. Her mother tested as a Delta, her father was a Gamma, but Amber was an Alpha. Her food, education, shelter, it was all paid for. Her parents took her out to celebrate, but their artificial affection was grating. She was their golden egg. But, being an Alpha gave her the option to emancipate herself in a limited fashion at twelve in exchange for service to others when she became an adult. She never looked back.
Amber moved to California, far from the dreary grey skies of Seattle. She excelled at school and made friends quickly, encountering many other intelligent and talented kids. With a degree by the time she was eighteen, it came time to pick her service. Teaching and public service were appealing, but the promise of going to space appealed to her sense of adventure.
Amber joined Earth Orbit Security expecting to be done in six years, but she loved her job too much. There was a sense of security, loyalty, and family, something she had never experienced before. She happily pursued a career with the UEG security force, although she did not push her way to the top, preferring to maintain the relationships which had kept her there.
Currently a Lieutenant Commander on the USS Rampart, Amber is looking to the future and has been talking to people about working together in the private sector. The plan is to purchase a ship to explore and survey new planets. Although, she is in no rush.
